Informations générales

Can you imagine how you would feel if your country is taken away from you? If you are torn from the land that has always been your home and that of your ancestors? And what would you say if the hopes of recovering it were further and further away?

That's how four million people live right now.

This documentary filmed in Myanmar, London, the Netherlands and Bangladesh tells the story of the current situation of the Rohingya community.

  • Since 1978, the Rohingya people have suffered several waves of violence from the Myanmar army.
  • About four million Rohingyas are now living in exile. More than one million survive in the Bangladesh refugee camps.
  • Through first person testimonies, he relates this genocidal persecution by the Burmese authorities. Elderly people, children, teenagers and women tell us about the horror through their personal experience.
  • They are crowded into the camps of Kutupalong, Teknaf, Hakim Para and Balukhali waiting for the resolution of the conflict which basically depends on the international community.

Caractéristiques principales

How will "Living Without a Country" be?

The documentary focuses on the testimonies of Nurul Islam, president of the Arakan Rohingya National Organization (ARNO) and Razia Sultana, lawyer and president of the Rohingya Women Welfare Society, decorated for her work in the International Women of Courage Awards by the U.S. State Department.

Various humanitarian aspects, such as children's education and health, come from the testimonies of UNICEF's education specialist, Mouri Chowdhury, and doctor Musfiq bin Amin of the International Organization for Migration of the United Nations (IOM).

The documentary consists of supporting images from the United Nations audiovisual archive, referring to the great migration of August 2017, and statements from the prime ministers of the nations of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

It makes use of a private photo/video archive from refugees who recorded the tragedies on site.

Graphics and 3D effects are also used to simulate the migration waves, and the experiences of those interviewed in the days of the military offensives.

Why a crowdfunding campaign?

All the people involved in this project have dedicated themselves to the cause, contributing their work, their time and their professionalism. It has been a long road of documentation, and research, especially to get the key testimonies, those who have lived this drama in their own skin and have kindly related it in front of our cameras.

From the first moment the promoters of the project have capitalized their work (this means that they have dedicated all the necessary hours to it, postponing their remuneration), but it has been necessary to count on external collaborators to make the documentary.

With the effort of everyone involved, we want this documentary to arrive as far as possible, being exhibited in numerous festivals and broadcast on TV channels in all countries. The Rohingya crisis dates back to the 40's. It is an immense humanitarian injustice that the media speaks little about, when the only solution that this people has is clear: That the international community should put pressure on Myanmar and the governments that support it, so that they can recover their country and their freedom.

Our goal is to release the documentary in 2021, in an international film festival, and for that we need your collaboration.

With this crowdfunding campaign we want to cover the postproduction costs of the documentary that are still in process. This includes the soundtrack, the aerial images and those taken during the 2017 migration, both collections coming from the UN.
Thanks to previous experience with other types of productions, we have the calculations very well adjusted.

The minimum collection covers only a part of the cost of the musical composition, the aforementioned UN images, and the promotion and distribution expenses. In the optimal goal we have contemplated other expenses, which in fact are essential, but which we have decided to place in the second part of the fundraising.

The optimal fundraising will allow us to pay not only to suppliers and external collaborators, but also to remunerate the work of creation of the project, which has infinite hours of work by the whole team, over two years. We will also be able to remunerate the cost of the campaign in Goteo (coordination of dissemination, shipping costs, commissions...).

Pourquoi est-ce important

We feel the responsibility to help alleviate the difficulties that the Rohingya people are going through. This situation involves continuous violations of human rights: executions, torture, sexual abuse, and other crimes.

With the documentary we help this people to stand up with their own voice. The horror experienced and the genocide to which the Rohingya have been subjected will not be remedied, but with the distribution and exhibition of this project, we contribute a grain of sand so that they can recover their country, their freedom and their identity.

How did we start this project?

"Living Without a Country" was born when Alberto Martos, the director, in November 2018 decided to go to Burma to see with his own eyes what was happening, and to understand how those waves of violence could be taking place in the middle of the 21st century.
Camera in hand, and on his own initiative, he recorded what would be the beginning of a documentary that would become a tool for those affected by this situation, the survivors of the Rohingya community, to express themselves, and to speak of their experience in their own words.

Soon, Pablo Alcántara, with the production company Pauxa Films, decided to join this adventure and support "Living Without a Country" from the beginning. So they got down to work, researching and talking to people involved in the Rohingya cause. In March 2019, Alberto traveled to London, accompanied by the director of photography, Luna Alcántara. There they collected important testimonies, such as the interview of Nurul Islam, however, the most important trip did not come until June 2019. Finally, Luna and Alberto had access to the largest refugee camp in the world, Kutupalong, located in Bangladesh.

It was in the refugee camp where they finally met Razia Sultana, one of the pillars on which the story that this documentary expresses, is based. They spent some intense days there, recording incredible testimonies, some of them from people who for the first time dared to express the traumatic experiences they had lived.

They are survivors of a real genocide, so their stories deserve to be told.

A few months later, it was announced that Aung San Suu Kyi was to appear at the International Court of Justice in The Hague to answer the accusation against the Burmese government and army for allowing and perpetrating these attacks. So, Alberto and Luna went to The Hague to witness that moment and include in the documentary a significant milestone in the struggle of the Rohingya people to regain what has been taken from them.
