À propos du projet

Let's improve the home and the education of the most disadvantaged children of Nakuru. We can do it!

Budget Matériel Minimal Optimal
MATERIAL TO REPAIR THE KITCHEN
Refractory bricks = 675 units x 0.58 € / unit = 389 €; Cement bags = 8 units x 6.3 € / unit = 50.54 €; Door = 1 unit x 48.6 € / unit = 48.6 €; Paint (boat 1 / 2L) = 1 unit x 2.43 € = 2.43 €; Pallet = 2 units x 1.26 € / unit = 2.53 €; Aluminum iron = 1 unit x 3.89 € / unit = 3.89 €; Gravel bag = 3 unit x 21.38 € / unit = 64.15 €.
€ 560
MATERIAL TO REPAIR WINDOWS
Transparent glass, 6mm thick = 80m ^ 2 x 5.92 € / 1m ^ 2 = 474 €; Dark glass, 6mm thick = 12m ^ 2 x 6.8 € / 1m ^ 2 = 81.6 €; Bags of 40kg of putty = 6 units x 16.5 € / unit = 99.1 €; Bottles of 5L of turpentine = 2 units x 7.65 € / unit = 15.3 €;
€ 670
BOOKS FOR THE STUDENTS
There are currently 300 students in the school of Pistis, among whom there are 80 orphans, Pistis is completely taken care of, and 220 children of the neighborhood in which it is located, most of which belong to families without resources. They practically do not have textbooks, which makes the education process very difficult. It would be ideal if at least we could get at least one book for each student: Textbooks = 300 units x 6.3 € / units = 1895 €
€ 1.895
Budget Infrastructure Minimal Optimal
NEW JIKOS FOR THE KITCHEN (1 UNIT IS ESSENTIAL)
Boilers for biomass cooking, capacity 800L = 1 units x 2250 € / unit = 2250 €
€ 2.250
NEW JIKOS FOR THE KITCHEN (1 ADDITIONAL UNIT WOULD BE DESIRABLE)
Boilers for biomass cooking, capacity 800L = 1 units x 2250 € / unit = 2250 € Only with a kettle can not meet current needs; It would be ideal if we got two pots).
€ 2.250
Budget Tâche Minimal Optimal
RECRUITMENT OF TEACHERS (1 MONTH)
There are currently 12 teachers at Pistis College. It would be ideal to finance this expenditure for at least 1 month to make it easier for them to cover other expenses. It would not be possible to continue with the education work of children without them ... The following is the calculation with the minimum salary: Teacher recruitment = 136 € / month / teacher * 12 teachers * 1 month = 1633 €
€ 1.633
Total € 3.480 € 9.258

Informations générales

The aim of this project is to give to the most disadvantaged children in Nakuru (Kenya) to get the home and education they deserve. We will get it thanks to your help!

To make it real, we are helping the "Pistis Children's Home", a orphanage and educational centre in Nakuru. At this moment, Pistis centre offers shelter to 80 orphans and teaches a total of 300 students, including the orphans and 220 other children in the suburb of Rhonda, where Pistis is located.

Our main challenge is to help "Pistis Children's Home" to make the necessary repairs of its facilities, so they can improve the currently precarious conditions. All raised funds will go directly to the orphanage to cover the following objectives:

-Repairing the kitchen: the kitchen is connected to the children's dormitory, so that the smoke from cooking flood the dormitory. To avoid this unhealthy and dangerous situation it is required to make some work on the kitchen and to install an exhaust pipe.

-Obtaining two new bigger marmites (or 'jikos'): the number of orphans in unfortunately keeps increasing more and more. Pistis has just two small marmites that are not enough to cook for every children. So we want to get two bigger marmites to solve this problem. Just one marmite would be quite helpful, but getting two marmites instead would be perfect to meet actual needs.

-Fixing the windows: windows are completely broken. This is a huge problem during the raining season, when water floods the dormitory and the classrooms. The rest of the year, classes are covered with dust every day.

On the other hand, we have some additional goals, not least important than the previous ones: to help Pistis to pay the teachers for at least a month. It would not be possible ensuring a proper education without them. This cost is usually impossible to cover, since feeding the children has more priority. We will help Pistis with these expenses based on the achieved funding.

We would also like to be able to provide at least one textbook to each student, both the orphans living in Pistis and the other children in the district of Rhonda who come to Pistis to receive classes, which belong to poor families and most of them cannot afford to buy any book.

Additionally, any other donation will be helpful: school material, hygiene material, knowledge and collaboration in plumbing and sanitation and electrical installations. With all this we will improve the conditions of Pistis children.

Involving and committing yourself with this and other projects published on this website, Goteo.org, you can get discounts between 30% and 75% of the amount of your donation (if you belong to the 'Agencia Tributaria Española'). For example, if you bring € 100, 'Agencia Tributaria' will refund you € 75 (your actual expense will then be only € 25). That way you can help us more than you thought!

In addition, we will reward you with a gift according to your contribution (you can see the details in the right part of the page).

Caractéristiques principales

Pistis Children's Home is an orphanage and an educational centre, which is located within the suburb of Rhonda in Nakuru (Kenya). There are currently 80 orphans in their facilities and a total of 300 students.

Pistis's goal is to rehabilitate and care for orphans and vulnerable children identified in their community. It provides them a shelter, food, medical care, clothing and education.

Pistis Education Center provides education according to the Kenyan system, with classes from preschool to high school. In this way it aims to prepare the children so that they can join the community with a consistent education to make them able to access university studies.

Pistis also offers a place of Christian worship in which daily offices are celebrated, which is well received by the community of Rhonda, who is mostly Christian.

The "Christian Ministries to the Destitute" (CMD) of Nakuru, Kenya, was founded in 2000 by Bishop Laban and the Reverend Gladys Wekesa. They were intended to help the Nakuru community. Number of orphans and vulnerable children in the Rhonda neighborhood was growing more and more. Then they decided to found the Pistis Children's Home in June 2000. In January 2001, this center was formally recognized by the state of Kenya. From that moment, they offer their services as an orphanage, educational center and church to the entire Rhonda community.

Regrettably, Bishop Laban, co-founder of Pistis, and Orlando Benard, one of the center's most involved teachers, recently died. This is why the situation is now a bit more complicated in Pistis. Rev. Gladys Wekesa and Alice Mwangi are now in charge of managing the center.

Pistis does not receive funding from the state. Their funds come mainly from a small crop, the sale of water to the population that they cleaned in their facilities and the small fee of the students of the neighborhood who go to the center. Unfortunately, this is often not enough and makes difficult to support orphans and educate all students.

Nakuru is the fourth largest city in Kenya, with a population of approximately one million people. It is the capital of the Rift Valley province. It is located in the middle of the eastern branch of the Rift Valley.

The growing number of orphans and vulnerable children in Nakuru are largely due to outbreaks of HIV and AIDS and the massive rural exodus. The Rhonda neighborhood, with more than 250,000 households, has the highest concentration rate of HIV-affected people in Nakuru. The above reasons together with other socio-economic factors make clear the importance of the work of centers like Pistis.

Pourquoi est-ce important

Carlota Gil is currently doing a five-week stay at Pistis, helping to teach the children. This made us understanding and identifying the needs and shortcomings of the center, as well as to know and stay in touch with the Pistis team (Rev. Gladys Wekesa, co-founder of the center, and Alice Mwangi, in charge of administration).

In this way, we will make sure that the funds go directly to Pistis so that we can fulfill all the objectives that we set.

Objectifs de la campagne de crowdfunding

In the short term, we intend, at a minimum, to repair the facilities of Pistis (kitchen and windows) and provide them with the kitchen utensils they need (two pots). If the contributions are big enough, we want to extend the scope of our project by covering the hiring of the center's teachers for at least one month, and providing two books to each of the students.

In the long term we will keep in touch with Pistis and help them to carry on, since their work is absolutely crucial and has a great impact on Nakuru society.

Expérience antérieure et équipe

"Pistis Children's Home" was founded in the year 2000, offering its services as an orphanage, educational center and church. The main current drivers of this project are Carlota Gil, volunteer from 'ELI' at Pistis, Alice Mwangi, administrative at Pistis. Pistis continuously hosts volunteers from this and other associations that will help make this project a reality. Soon, in July, two more volunteers from ELI will come.
