Informations générales

We want to make a yearly festival that celebrates Internationalism and Solidarity using the language of art and culture. We want to bring together the local and international communities in understanding their common interests and rejecting the agenda of the far right.

We want to base the festival on the previous work of the Solidarity project that has been running for 5 years as a community participation art and historical memory project that is successfully building a monument to the International Brigadistas of the ship the Ciudad de Barcelona that was sunk in 1937.

Video / The story so far of Solidarity Park /
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo0nxa9PPZ8

The Solidarity Park project has built a platform of artists and activists and an education programme for school students that promotes the historical memory of the International brigades and their role in the Spanish civil war and its relevance for today's struggle. We want to greatly expand the success of the project into a yearly festival and unite against far right ideology today.

Caractéristiques principales

Our motivation is to create a living memorial to the ideals of the International Brigades, this is a project for everyone as the intention is to unite our communities in social harmony. We have a special focus on school students and artists local and International. We want to bring together like minded associations and individuals under one umbrella, under one common festival to celebrate our differences and diversity.

Solidarity Park has united with the Amical de les Brigades Internacionals association in Catalonia, the La Voz Ahogada theatre company, and the Associació Catalana d'Expresos Polítics del Franquisme . and www.coopkopelli.com The Natural Coopmunicacio and Outa-Space – International arts podcast Together we plan to unite with our international supporters, other associations, artists, political groups, trade unions and individuals to create this festival. We want you to be directly involved.
Solidarity Park at present has a weekly team of 4 that meets to coordinate plans and a monthly assembly open to all participants that is at the moment in three languages. We will hold two annual meetings open to all to maximise new participation but also for maximum democracy and transparency. In Addition to our social media connections we are developing a newsletter in at least 3 languages.

We have been awarded match funding from Barcelona diputacio of €5600 so our next step is to reach this target and release these funds. With your help here we can do it. The project to date has been done by volunteers and this will continue but to achieve our ambition we need to move towards having a professional daily team that can support this rapidly expanding project.

Pourquoi est-ce important

Key Objectives

We aim to organise 2 festivals a year. A major one over a long weekend of the 30th May which is the anniversary of the sinking of the ship the Ciudad de Barcelona and another on the 30th October that marks the anniversary that the International brigades left the Spanish state.

The May festival has been conducted online for the last two years and has shown what is possible. We now want in May 2022 a physical festival in conjunction with the inauguration of the monument. We are not focused on big names artists but regular artists who are the ones that are central to community culture. We believe there is fantastic talent inside every local community and we want to show that to the world.

Main tools

Artist and Participation
We use participation whenever possible and want to incorporate this into the yearly festival. Inviting international artists to work together with the community in developing our culture. The Solidarity Park monument itself was built in stone in the street with over 700 people being involved. In addition to the two large online yearly festivals we have also held an international exhibition of 120 artists. All the time connecting the International artist with the local artist in the context of the projects key aims

Schools and Participation
We have to date the participation of over 1000 secondary school students who take part in workshops that do mix classes of language, history and art focusing on the role of the International brigades. The students are directly asked to design work that can form part of the monument. The monument is designed so this can continue for many years into the future. All the work they produce is put into exhibitions and performances in the yearly festival. In this way we ask them to help us tell this important story to the world. Schools have been involved in Catalonia but also Germany, Australia and Sweden.

We want to create a professional dossier so that our schools project and all its many aspects can be shared across catalonia, the spanish state and the world. We need to create a budget that meets the expenses for this rapidly developing work.

Next steps
This October we are creating a spectacular that includes a theatre production, international choirs and a film about how we are growing from a local monument to an International festival. This event will be filmed and translated and then streamed across the world to maximise our Internationalist impact.

We want to develop a podcast series which covers our key areas of work of Art, education and history. Include interviews with families of brigadists, historians, participating artists and activists. We hoped to also develop the important role women have played in the stories around the International brigades.

The project has many wings and new ones are opening all the time. For example, we are organising International choirs to come together and collaborate with each other to produce common performances again we are connecting the local choirs with the International ones. There is a huge space for new people to join with the project and develop new collaborations, that is what we are about so make contact.

A dedicated team
We need to create a small professional team that can coordinate the work, create the materials, build the infrastructure and win future funding that will be needed to bring all our plans for this festival to life.

Expérience antérieure et équipe

We started as a community project building a monument and are evolving into an International festival. We are based in Catalonia but we are people from across the world.

With the ethos of community participation and the connections of the local to the International we have gathered many partners who represent a wide range of skills and connections, Including numerous teachers in catalonia and internationally, activists, historians and families of the International brigades and we have the participation of 100’s of artists. We come from many backgrounds but all that participate are committed to the unity of the project and the ideals we are exposing.

We are full of enthusiasm and are committed to build the idea of a yearly International arts festival against the far right but we lack resources that match the potential that we have in front of us so we appeal for you financial help and also for you to join with us practically
