Informations générales

GENERAL INFORMATION
What the project SKEINS AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE is aiming at is to create a huge collective bow, a kilometric piece of art which makes visible and promotes the prevention of gender-based violence. Currently the bow is 4,006 meters long and it is travelling throughout Spain (Asturias, Madrid, Toledo, Valencia, Alicante, Navarre) and also abroad (London, Tunisia and Sweden in June 2018).

THE DOCUMENTARY
When knitting turns into a fight against gender-based violence. A group of knitting women find in their work a means to express their position against gender-based violence. The stories, like threads, take the shape of recognition, of testimony, of opportunity. Bows get together, bonds are made, and anonymous faces participate in the collective objective and create a symbol.
A symbol of time, memory and transition of women’s knowledge. Every knit stitch and every patch the skein is made of represents an absence, a name, a usurped life, a voice that shouts: Enough!
Then, knitting becomes the beginning of these bows of sorority, which depict each participant as a bonding link with many others and where the individual becomes collective.
This is a whole year story of the people who make up the Skeins against gender-based violence project. Anonymous faces that one day decided to go beyond their routines to reach many others with a single message: “Not one more (woman) dead.”

Caractéristiques principales

OBJETIVES OF THE CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN
Our intention is to tell the story of anonymous women who found a way to claim the eradication of gender-based violence through their everyday work with knitting. For them, knitting meant public visibility, the opening to new horizons that will take them to travel and form a wide network with other women; a network that remains in time and consolidates the bonds of sorority every day.
We would also like for the documentary to be an invitation to participate in the SKEINS Project and an attempt to deeply think about violence against women. A reflection that arises from the encounter with other women, from very different points of view and perspectives that come together in the ability to knit not only threads but also words that turn into a message, where breaking the silence and meeting each other is the action.
The documentary will be filmed during 2018 in those places where the bow is going to, explaining and making these women’s processes and demands visible. For this reason, we would like to be able to pay the technical team that will come with us in the adventure of giving voice to this project and to the women who star in it.

ACTIVITIES DONE BY SKEINS IN 2018:
• Maintenance, measuring and packaging of the bow for it to be sent to the different meeting places.
• Press conference at the Town Hall in Astigarraga to present the project GIPUZKOA KNITTING EQUALITY 2018. March 2018.
• 5th SEMINAR “CLARA CAMPOAMOR, SCHOOL OF FEMINIST THINKING” in Fuenlabrada, April 26 and 27 (Marcela Lagarde and Amelia Valcárcel attended this seminar). 700 women signed up.
• Get-together in UGENA, TOLEDO. Around 300 women got together on April 27, 28 and 29.
• OLATU TALKA in DONOSTIA. We will be knitting at Zuloaga Square together with other residents on May 26 and 27.
• SKEINS will go to Sweden (WANAS FOUNDATION in KNISLINGUE) in June.
• EUROPEAN SEMINARS ON HERITAGE. This year’s topic will be: Heritage, woman’s legacy. SKEINS will be in the museum MATER in PASAIA (tuna boat) in October.
• On November 25, INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, we will be visiting some municipalities in Gipuzkoa which have been campaigning with the project.
• More events can occur throughout the year…

THE SKEIN PROJECT’S GOAL: TO KNIT AND KEEP THAT NETWORK, WHICH IS GOING TO BE A GAME CHANGER THANKS TO ALL THOSE BONDS.
SKEIN’S WORKING AREAS:
We focus on three main areas:
• Women empowerment (how it is possible to achieve such a big project, personal experiences…)
• Fight against gender-based violence (data, memories of all those women and their murdered daughters…)
• Sorority, the bond among all of us; team work from different places and different approaches.

THE SKEIN PROJECT WORKS BECAUSE:
• It is made visible and many groups become aware of it (from boys and girls in schools to the elderly in day care old people’s homes)
• The women who take part in it come from very different backgrounds (from olive gatherers in Andalusia to miners’ daughters in Asturias)
• With this project, the feminist action reaches places which are difficult to access to.
All the women of SKEINS from all these territories join in creating a big WORK TEAM and succeeding in MAKING THIS PROJECT BIGGER AND BIGGER AND ALIVE all together (it has already been 4 years).

Pourquoi est-ce important

WHO IS THIS PROJECT FOR:
This project is aimed at all those people who are looking for creative spaces where they can protest against gender-based violence.
All those people who are interested in fighting and eradicating violence against all women.
People who would like to be a part of this big bow, contributing a wool patch, taking part in the get-togethers or supporting the project.
We are talking to you, who stand for a free-violence reality where bonds and sorority are the way to build a more equalitarian world.
Skeins is made up of feminist, women and cultural associations, school groups, different institutions – Town Halls, Foundations, Regional Government Bodies– and citizens in general from all over the world who each day make this project bigger with one more patch.
