Informations générales

Gamestar(t) is the project focused on education and video games that ARSGAMES (www.arsgames.net/) has been developing in collaboration with Intermediae Matadero-Madrid since 2010.

In Gamestar(t), art intertwines with technology, and play becomes the driving force of learning.

The people involved in Gamestar(t) are learning to establish other kinds of relationships with technology, not merely as passive users, but as authentic generators of knowledge.

Gamestar(t) structure is designed to foster active learning through projects, whether individual or collective. Children decide together what they want to learn –since desire is formed collectively–, which resources they will use to learn it, and how to manage their own projects.

Caractéristiques principales

The project combines the advantages of technologically-mediated education with pedagogical innovation based on alternative pedagogical models. Organizing themselves horizontally through assemblies, the project’s participants decide upon its development, its contents and the knowledge they want to acquire in the process: It is a space of self-managed learning.

GAMESTAR(T) is an intersection between art, technology and pedagogical innovation. Although video games have a central role in the whole activity, the project integrates other elements that coexist with video games as different forms of artistic and technological creation (comic, cinema, painting, music, software programming, etc.).

  1. LEARNING AND CREATION SPACE ‘ARTEC’. The project has three spaces, which the player can move freely from one another: the dome (intended for assembly meetings), the video game shuttle (equipped with television sets, computers, video consoles and video games) and the ‘artec’ zone (where art materials are mixed with expendable CPUs ready for dismantling, computers equipped with software for programming, creating video games, surfing the Internet, etc.) which serves as a space for artistic creation and experimentation.

  2. EXTERNAL COLLABORATIONS. Inviting other related art projects to collaborate on-site, allowing attendees to take part in their development.

  3. VISITS TO DIFFERENT CULTURAL CENTERS AND OTHER OUTINGS. Visits to different cultural centers and other kinds of outings, provided that such has been agreed in the assembly, with the aim of supporting and assisting the development of the projects.

  4. WORKSHOPS. Workshops given by professionals that apply teaching and learning methodologies along the lines of the project, which are intended to meet basic knowledge and skill acquisition needs.

  5. GAMETECA. The Gameteca, or game library, contains video consoles, video games, board games, role-playing games, etc. that are available for the project development, for external collaborations or for research purposes. All the materials will be catalogued in an online database as part of the creation of a Project Archive.

  6. OPEN-GAMESTAR(T). Round-table discussions with invited experts in art, pedagogy, video games and technology, whose purpose is to make explicit and discuss the project’s methodology. These round tables have an innovative “game-format”, so that speakers present their ideas while actually playing a game.

  7. GAMESTAR(T) PROFESSIONAL. Thematic workshops focused on specific issues or topics, with a similar methodology to that of the project. More information at: gamestart.arsgames.net/

  8. GAMESTAR(T) ACADEMICO Workshops aimed at teachers and intended to introduce them to new uses of video games in the classroom. More information at: gamestart.arsgames.net/

Pourquoi est-ce important

The Gamestar(t) project is mainly aimed at children and teenagers from 8 to 18 of age. However, owing to the project’s inherent complexity, there are also spaces and activities intended for an adult audience (parents, teachers, experts, etc.) to exchange knowledge and experiences. These are the Open-GAMESTAR(T), the courses for teacher training and some of the on-site artist collaborations.

The project’s objectives are:

• Providing participants with an approach to video games from unusual and non-commercial perspectives to show that video games are also a learning tool and a true cultural experience.

• Familiarizing the activity’s participants with the video games language; promoting critical thinking; offering tools in order for them to modify and create their own video games.

• Helping the participants to create technology and experiment with it.

• Spreading the principles of free and shared culture.

• Creating and fostering cooperative team activities related to gaming.

• Contributing to bridging the second digital divide and the gender digital divide, as well as promoting critical digital literacy.

• Stimulating participants’ self-development, taking into account their educational and affective needs.

Objectifs de la campagne de crowdfunding

Keep the GAMESTAR(T) project alive and give the children the chance to see their ongoing projects finished.

Specific objectives:

  • Acquiring materials and equipment (materials for artec, video games, video consoles, computers, photo and video cameras, etc.), either by purchasing, donating or recycling them.

  • Acquiring materials for the workshops already planned and scheduled by the children themselves, like «how to make your own skateboard» or «how to make a stop motion film».

  • Constructing infrastructure to store, classify and organize the materials, as well as to assemble and disassemble the equipment quickly and efficiently.

  • Generating and maintain an online video game repository.

  • Publishing a book about the project, both in digital and printed versions and under a free license, which may serve others as a guidance to reproduce this experience elsewhere.

  • Producing audiovisual documentation of the creation process and final outcome of the participants’ projects.

  • Producing one of the children’s projects, consisting in a documentary about what we can learn from video games entitled «Mum, don’t turn the console off ».

  • Starting the Academic Garmestar(t) and Professional Gamestar(t) educational programs.

  • Organizing the Open-GAMESTAR(T) round tables, with the participation of experts in the fields of art, technology and video games, with the aim of enriching the project from a theoretical point of view.

  • Host on-site artist collaboration, allowing Gamestar(t) attendees to participate in the production of a professional art project that will be exhibited at festivals and art galleries.

Expérience antérieure et équipe

GAMESTAR(T) is an artistic and educational project that has been evolving throughout its four editions.

The first edition of the project (2011) obtained the funding for contemporary creation projects granted by Matadero Madrid. It was developed with a group of children at risk of social exclusion of 12 and 13 years of age in cooperation with the Arganzuela Children Day Care (Red Cross).
More information at: es.scribd.com/doc/95263465/Dossier-GAMESTAR-T-2011

The second edition (July 2012 at Intermediae-Matadero) was named Summer Video Game School GAMESTAR(T) and served as a place for the neighborhood’s children from 8 to 16 to meet and begin to explore together technology, video games, computers, etc. Play became the driving force for learning in a context where the educational and ludic elements intertwined and reinforced one another. During three-hour sessions held three days a week children and teenagers had the opportunity to experiment with art and technology from the position of creators. More information at: arsgames.net/blog/

The third edition is the ongoing project developed this year for which funding is now requested. More information at: www.gamestart.arsgames.net ; or at: arsgames.net/blog/

Finally, the fourth edition, Gamestar(t) Explosion, held at Intermediae Matadero during Christmas holidays. An condensed version of Gamesta(t) that included workshops focused on gender, history of art, philosophy, psychology, sculpture and painting, video game level design, etc. All the workshops were developed through play and video games and, in their final stage, allowed children to create their own workshops.

Gamestar(t) is an ARSGAMES Project coordinated by Eurídice Cabañes and María Rubio. ARGAMES is a collective that since 2006 has successfully organized numerous activities, events, conferences and educational projects.

Both ARSGAMES and the Gamestar(t) project have professionals with wide experience in the field of education, resources (specially video games and consoles) incorporated to the Gameteca in the course of the different project’s editions, and tools for information sharing thanks to the communication through social networks (web 2.0).
